A little magic for February half-term at Hedingham Castle’s Brightworths School of Magic

Hedingham Castle Hedingham Castle

If your half-term plans could do with a sprinkle of something special, you might want to pop this one in the diary. This February, the much-loved Brightworths School of Magic returns to Hedingham Castle, transforming its ancient stone walls into a world of spells, potions and magical creatures.

Running from 16–22 February, the experience is designed for children aged 3 to 10, with two sessions each day (morning and afternoon). It’s a fully immersive, indoor adventure, perfect for unpredictable winter weather — and one that’s as imaginative as it is hands-on.

What happens at the School of Magic?

Rather than watching from the sidelines, children become students for the day. After enrolling, they’re guided through a series of magical lessons led by Brightworths’ wonderfully in-character teachers.

Young wizards can expect to:

  • Create their own wand in Wand Class, decorating it to take home
  • Brew potions with Professor Greenbottom, mixing mysterious (and child-friendly!) ingredients
  • Practise spells, learning the all-important swish-and-flick technique
  • Meet enchanted animals, with the chance to handle small mammals, reptiles and other curious creatures

Each child also receives a 2026 magical diary, collecting stamps from their lessons before earning their official School of Magic Certificate at the end of their visit — a lovely keepsake from the day.

Dress-up encouraged (adults included)

One of the joys of this event is how fully it leans into imagination. Children are encouraged to arrive in costume, whether that’s cloaks, wizard hats or their own magical creations. Older siblings and parents are welcome too — and don’t be surprised if grown-ups find themselves getting a little caught up in the magic.

A castle made for storytelling

There’s something particularly fitting about stepping into a School of Magic inside a real Norman castle. As one of the best-preserved keeps in the country, Hedingham Castle’s historic interiors add atmosphere you simply can’t recreate elsewhere. The entire experience takes place inside the castle, so rain, wind or winter chill won’t dampen the fun.

Whether your child is already spell-obsessed or just loves imaginative play, this is one of those half-term outings that feels properly memorable — the sort they’ll still be talking about long after the cloaks are packed away.
