1. Harlow Pets’ Corner – Harlow Town Park

A huge favourite of ours! A tiny petting farm within Harlow Town Park, full of goats, reindeer, alpacas, meerkats, and even a tortoise in the Africa enclosure—entry is free, though donations are welcome. Plus there’s a brilliant playground next door. Parking nearby is partly free: Netteswell Cross car park offers 2 hours free on weekends, and up to 1 hour free on weekdays.

2. Great Notley Country Park, Braintree

Best known for its giant play trail, which stretches for over a mile. Perfect for toddlers who like to climb and balance, though you’ll definitely need wellies in autumn. Parking is paid, but the trail itself is free and worth the effort.

3. Gruffalo and Stick Man Trails – Essex Country Parks

Essex parks bring storybooks to life with woodland trails. There’s a Gruffalo Trail at Thorndon Nature Discovery Park, a Stick Man Trail at Weald Country Park, and even Wind in the Willows characters at Hanningfield.
